Fibromyalgia and Ozone Therapy: Pain, Fatigue, Sleep, and Function

Short answerThe potential contributions of medical ozone to pain, fatigue, sleep, and well-being in fibromyalgia are being investigated in clinical studies. The application is evaluated together with sleep, exercise tolerance, local pain components, and a multimodal treatment plan.

The holistic nature of fibromyalgia

Widespread pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, exercise intolerance, cognitive complaints, headache, and gastrointestinal symptoms can co-occur. Treatment goals focus not only on the pain score, but also on sleep, energy, and daily function.

Why is ozone being investigated?

Due to the theoretical framework associated with oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, the autonomic nervous system, and central pain processing mechanisms, the redox and inflammation responses of systemic ozone are being investigated. These mechanisms provide a scientific research basis for multidimensional symptom monitoring in fibromyalgia.

What does the randomized study tell us?

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in which major and minor autohemotherapy were used together, positive results were reported in some sub-measures such as fatigue, sleep, and well-being. The absence of a significant difference in the total FIQ score between groups suggests that evaluating the effect of ozone across separate clinical goals rather than through a single total score for all symptoms may be more meaningful.

Local pain components

If there are prominent paravertebral, trapezius, or gluteal trigger points accompanying fibromyalgia, local methods can be evaluated separately. Addressing systemic approaches and local pain sources together is important for personalized planning.

Exercise and function

A sustainable and progressive aerobic/strength approach starting from low intensity is at the center of treatment. The potential contribution of ozone can be monitored through functional goals, such as whether it facilitates the individual’s participation in movement and rehabilitation by reducing pain or fatigue.

Sleep

Sleep apnea, restless legs, delayed sleep onset, frequent awakenings, and medication effects should be evaluated separately. Changes in sleep quality are among the important criteria for clinical response in fibromyalgia.

Our Approach at Our Bodrum Clinic

In fibromyalgia, we monitor pain, fatigue, sleep, and function separately. When medical ozone is considered, we do not personalize the application in isolation, but alongside exercise, sleep routine, nutrition, and, when necessary, pharmacological and other pain treatments.
