Ozone in Male Infertility, Oligospermia, and Asthenozoospermia: Redox and Holistic Approach

Short answerThe potential role of medical ozone in male infertility is investigated through oxidative stress and redox balance. The clinical approach is individualized by evaluating semen analysis, hormonal status, varicocele, lifestyle, and other causes together.

Oligospermia and asthenozoospermia

Impairments in sperm concentration and motility may be associated with hormonal causes, varicocele, genetics, infections, testicular factors, medications, anabolic steroids/testosterone, obesity, and environmental factors. Therefore, the treatment plan relies primarily on the accurate identification of the underlying cause.

Oxidative stress and sperm health

The sperm membrane is sensitive to oxidative damage; however, physiological reactive oxygen signaling is also necessary for sperm functions. The goal is not to suppress all oxidants, but to support redox balance.

Why is ozone being investigated?

The effects of medical ozone on controlled redox signaling, antioxidant defense, and microcirculation generate biological interest in terms of male reproductive health. As of September 2026, controlled human data on direct clinical outcomes such as pregnancy, live birth, and sperm parameters are limited. Rather than ruling out the potential of the method, this indicates that more robust studies are needed to define which patient groups and which protocols may yield clinical benefit.

Environmental ozone and medical ozone are not the same

Via the respiratory route, environmental ozone is a toxic air pollutant. In epidemiological human studies, exposure to environmental ozone has been associated with lower semen quality; controlled medical ozone is evaluated using different administration routes and dosing principles.

Standard evaluation

Semen analysis, hormonal evaluation, and investigations for varicocele, genetics, or infections should be performed according to clinical necessity. When needed, sperm DNA fragmentation can be evaluated. If medical ozone is considered, it is added to this foundational infertility evaluation with complementary objectives.

Lifestyle

The EAU and AUA/ASRM approach emphasizes the correction of obesity, smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, low physical activity, heat, and other environmental risks. Nutrition, sleep, and metabolic health are also key areas that can influence sperm quality.

Our Approach at Our Bodrum Clinic

In male infertility, we first evaluate semen parameters, hormones, varicocele, metabolic status, current medications, and lifestyle factors. If there is an appropriate clinical objective for medical ozone, we approach it within a personalized complementary plan in terms of redox and microcirculation support; we monitor the response through semen parameters and clinical goals.
