Botulinum Toxin in Axillary Excessive Sweating

In primary axillary hyperhidrosis, it can markedly reduce sweating by temporarily reducing the cholinergic signal to the sweat glands.

Short answerIn primary axillary hyperhidrosis, it can significantly reduce sweating by temporarily reducing the cholinergic signal to the sweat glands.

What is Botulinum Toxin for Axillary Excessive Sweating?

The goal of botulinum toxin applications is to temporarily and controllably modulate the activity of the target muscle or gland. The result varies depending on personal anatomy, muscle strength, application area, and clinical objective.

What is axillary hyperhidrosis?

Sweating in the underarms at a level that cannot be explained by environmental heat or exercise requirements can affect daily life, clothing choices, and social comfort. First, it is evaluated whether the sweating is primary or associated with medications or another health condition.

How does botulinum toxin help?

It aims to reduce sweating in the treated area by temporarily decreasing the nerve signal that stimulates the sweat glands. The objective is not to stop the body’s general heat regulation system, but to control local excessive sweating.

How is the response monitored?

In the evaluation, not only the amount of sweat, but also the change in daily life and quality of life is important. Because the effect decreases over time, follow-up is planned according to the personal response.

Who can be evaluated for it?

Secondary causes of sweating and medications used are inquired into. The treatment provides local symptom control.

Pre-procedure evaluation

In our clinic, rather than applying a standard pattern of points, our approach is to evaluate history, dynamic examination, facial or functional anatomy, asymmetry, previous applications, and the individual’s goals together. In the evaluation, the individual’s medical history, anatomical features, previous applications, and expectations from the treatment are addressed together.

Scientific evidence

The use of botulinum toxin in this field is addressed within the framework of clinical research and expert assessments. Appropriate patient selection, accurately defined goals, and personalized evaluation are the foundation of treatment.

When does the effect begin and how long does it last?

The effect usually begins to appear within the first days and becomes noticeable in the following days. The duration may vary according to the application area, muscle activity, and individual biological differences. The timing of the follow-up examination is planned according to the type of application.

Possible side effects

Pain, tenderness, bruising, or headache may be seen at the injection site. Area-specific effects such as temporary asymmetry, unintended weakness in neighboring muscles, changes in eyelid/eyebrow position, changes in oral functions, or difficulty swallowing may occur. Rare but serious generalized muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or breathing difficulties require emergency medical evaluation.

In whom might it not be suitable?

Active infection at the application site, known hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin components, and certain neuromuscular diseases require special attention. Pregnancy/breastfeeding, anticoagulant use, aminoglycosides or medications that can affect neuromuscular transmission, and previous botulinum toxin applications must be shared with the physician.

Things to consider after the procedure

Short-term tenderness, redness, or small bruises may be observed in the application area. Because the onset of effect may take time, the level of sweating during the first days should not be evaluated as the final result. If an unexpected decrease in grip strength or weakness affecting daily hand functions is noticed after palm applications, contact our clinic. Generalized muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or breathing difficulties require emergency medical evaluation.

Our approach in our Bodrum clinic

In therapeutic applications, we evaluate botulinum toxin not merely as an “injection procedure” alone, but in coordination with diagnosis, functional goals, rehabilitation, and, when necessary, relevant specialties.

Frequently asked questions

Is the effect permanent?

No. Neuromuscular or neuroglandular communication re-establishes over time, and the effect diminishes.

Is the application planned the same way for everyone?

No. The plan is personalized taking into account clinical findings, anatomy, functional goals, and previous application experiences.

Why is the follow-up evaluation important?

The effect develops gradually. The follow-up evaluation helps review the clinical response, function, and treatment goals together.
