Laser Therapy in Hand and Finger Osteoarthritis | Hand Osteoarthritis / Finger Joint Pain

Direct 980/1470 nm evidence for laser in hand and finger osteoarthritis is limited; photobiomodulation may be considered an adjunctive option for superficial joint pain, but it should not be stated to reverse the disease.

Short answerHand and finger osteoarthritis can cause pain, stiffness, and difficulty gripping, especially in the DIP, PIP, and thumb base joints. Laser/photobiomodulation can be used for symptom control in superficial joint pain; however, strong clinical evidence specific to 980 or 1470 nm for hand osteoarthritis is limited.

What is hand osteoarthritis?

It is a condition characterized by degenerative changes in the cartilage and periarticular structures. Short-duration morning stiffness, pain after use, and reduced grip strength may be observed.

How can laser help?

The goal is to reduce periarticular pain and support movement/exercise tolerance. Laser should not be used with the claim of reversing osteoarthritic structural changes.

The role of 980 nm

It can be used in superficial small joints; data directly specific to hand osteoarthritis is limited.

The role of 1470 nm

Although very superficial joints are anatomically accessible, there are insufficient studies demonstrating the clinical efficacy of 1470 nm, and thermal load requires caution.

What does the scientific evidence say?

Level of evidence: C. HILT has supportive data for knee osteoarthritis and various orthopedic pains; direct evidence for hand osteoarthritis is weaker.

Our approach at our Bodrum clinic

At our Bodrum clinic, it is determined whether the pain is due to osteoarthritis, tendon problems, inflammatory arthritis, or nerve entrapment. If laser is used, it is added to joint movements, grip exercise, and daily load regulation.

Frequently asked questions

Can finger osteoarthritis be resolved with laser?

Laser is not a proven method for reversing osteoarthritis; it can help with pain and function.
