Laser in Thumb Base Osteoarthritis | 1st CMC Osteoarthritis / Thumb Base Pain When Opening Jars

Direct 980/1470 nm evidence for laser in thumb base 1st CMC osteoarthritis is limited. It may be considered as an adjunctive photobiomodulation option for superficial joint pain; it has not been shown to reverse structural osteoarthritis.

Short answerThumb base osteoarthritis is a common hand joint problem that causes pain during opening jars, turning keys, and strong gripping. Because the joint is superficial, laser application is anatomically possible; however, high-quality direct efficacy evidence specific to 980 or 1470 nm is limited.

1. What is CMC osteoarthritis?

Degenerative changes develop in the trapeziometacarpal joint between the thumb and wrist. Pain, reduced grip strength, and joint deformity over time may be observed.

How can laser help?

The goal is to reduce pain and facilitate hand exercises and daily use. Laser should not be used with the claim that it reverses structural osteoarthritis in the joint.

The role of 980 nm

It can be used in the superficial joint and periarticular tissues.

The role of 1470 nm

Because the joint is very superficial, it is anatomically accessible; however, there is no clinical efficacy data specific to 1470 nm, and the superficial thermal load must be controlled carefully.

What does the scientific evidence say?

Level of evidence: C. Although general laser data in the field of orthopedic pain and osteoarthritis are supportive, direct data specific to thumb CMC osteoarthritis are insufficient.

Our approach in our Bodrum clinic

In our Bodrum clinic, CMC osteoarthritis, De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, and other tendon/joint causes are differentiated in thumb base pain. If laser is considered, it is planned together with splints, joint protection strategies, and hand exercises.

Frequently asked questions

Why does pain occur when opening a jar?

The thumb base joint is exposed to high loads during strong gripping; in CMC osteoarthritis, this movement is typically painful.

Does laser eliminate osteoarthritis?

No. The goal is to support symptoms and function.
