Important differential diagnosis
Chest wall pain must be distinguished from cardiac, pulmonary, pleural, shingles, or rib pathologies. New or unexplained chest pain must be medically evaluated before laser application.
980 and 1470 nm
980 nm is more rational for superficial muscle targets. 1470 nm has a very superficial thermal character; there are no direct efficacy data for intercostal pain.
Scientific evidence
Level of evidence: C-. There is indirect support from myofascial pain and HILT literature; specific data for the intercostal region are insufficient.
Our approach at our Bodrum clinic
First, cardiac, pulmonary, neuropathic, and traumatic causes are ruled out. If true myofascial pain is identified, laser can be added to movement, breathing, and trunk exercises.
