IPL / BBL Hair Removal: Long-Term Hair Reduction

Long-term hair reduction with IPL/BBL; in which hair types it is more effective, differences from laser hair removal, session schedule, and safety.

Moderate evidence

Short answerIPL/BBL hair removal aims to achieve long-term hair reduction by targeting melanin-containing hair follicles with broad-spectrum light. The best response is usually seen with fair skin–dark terminal hair contrast; efficacy is limited on white, gray, or very light hair.

How does IPL hair removal work?

Light is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft and follicle, producing selective thermal damage. Due to the hair growth cycle, not all follicles can be targeted in the same session; therefore, a series of treatments is required.

Difference between IPL and laser hair removal

While lasers produce coherent light at specific wavelengths, IPL/BBL limits broad-spectrum light using filters. Efficacy depends not only on the device class, but also on spot size, pulse duration, cooling, skin type, hair diameter, and energy settings.

In whom is it planned more cautiously?

In dark or tanned skin, epidermal melanin can also absorb the energy, increasing the risk of burns/pigmentary changes. In cases with findings such as hormonal hair growth, rapid new hair formation, or irregular menstruation, the underlying cause should be evaluated separately.

Scientific data

There are numerous comparative studies for light-assisted hair removal. Current safety reviews describe adverse effects such as burns, transient erythema, pigmentary changes, and rarely paradoxical hypertrichosis. Parameter and patient selection is the foundation of safety.

Our approach at our Bodrum clinic

We plan filters and energy according to skin phototype, tanning, hair color/thickness, and anatomical area. We do not recommend unnecessary sessions for unsuitable light hair; for hormonal patterns, we incorporate investigation of the cause into the treatment plan.
