What are Masseter Botox and Facial Slimming?
The goal of botulinum toxin treatments is to temporarily and controllably modulate the activity of the target muscle or gland. The result varies depending on personal anatomy, muscle strength, the treatment area, and the clinical objective.
A wide lower face is not always caused by the masseter muscle
Lower facial width may be due to masseter hypertrophy, or it may be related to bone structure, parotid tissue, or fat distribution. For this reason, before considering treatment for facial slimming, an evaluation is performed to determine whether the muscle is genuinely prominent.
What is the result of reducing muscle activity?
In pronounced hypertrophy, a reduction in muscle volume and a softening of the lower facial contour may be observed over time. The result is not an immediately apparent volume change and varies according to individual anatomy.
Why is chewing function monitored?
The masseter is a powerful muscle of mastication. It is important not to cause an unnecessary reduction in chewing function for the sake of an aesthetic goal and to evaluate existing laxity in the lower face.
Who can be evaluated for this?
Muscle hypertrophy is distinguished from bone structure and the parotid region. Chewing function and the risk of laxity in the facial oval are evaluated.
Pre-treatment evaluation
In our clinic, rather than applying a standard point template, our approach is to evaluate the medical history, dynamic examination, facial or functional anatomy, asymmetry, previous treatments, and the individual’s goals together. In the evaluation, the person’s medical history, anatomical characteristics, previous treatments, and expectations from the therapy are addressed collectively.
Scientific evidence
The use of botulinum toxin in this field is addressed within the framework of clinical research and expert assessments. Appropriate patient selection, a correctly defined goal, and personalized evaluation are the foundation of the treatment.
When does the effect begin and how long does it last?
The effect generally begins to appear within the first few days and becomes more pronounced in the following days. The duration may vary depending on the application area, muscle activity, and individual biological differences. The timing of the follow-up examination is planned according to the type of application.
Possible side effects
Pain, tenderness, bruising, or headache may occur at the injection site. Specific to the region, effects such as temporary asymmetry, unintended weakness in adjacent muscles, changes in eyelid/eyebrow position, changes in oral functions, or difficulty swallowing may occur. Rare but serious generalized muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or difficulty breathing require emergency medical evaluation.
Who may not be suitable?
Active infection in the treatment area, known hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin components, and certain neuromuscular diseases require special caution. Pregnancy/breastfeeding, anticoagulant use, aminoglycosides or medications that may affect neuromuscular transmission, and previous botulinum toxin treatments should be shared with the physician.
Post-treatment considerations
It is advisable not to unnecessarily rub or heavily manipulate the treatment area on the same day. Short-term redness, tenderness, or minor bruises may appear at the injection points. It is usually possible to return to daily life within a short time; if heavy exercise, intense heat exposure, or another facial procedure is planned, follow your physician’s recommendations according to your personal situation. Since the effect is not immediately complete, early decisions regarding symmetry should not be made in the first hours or first days. If a pronounced change in mouth movements, difficulty swallowing, unexpected pronounced muscle weakness, or another symptom that causes you concern develops, contact our clinic. Serious symptoms such as difficulty breathing or pronounced difficulty swallowing require emergency medical evaluation.
Our approach in our Bodrum clinic
Our goal is not to standardize facial expression, but to create a personalized plan that preserves the individual’s natural expressions, facial proportions, and opposing muscle balance.
Frequently asked questions
Is the effect permanent?
No. Neuromuscular or neuroglandular communication re-establishes over time, and the effect diminishes.
Is the treatment planned the same way for everyone?
No. The plan is individualized by taking into account clinical findings, anatomy, functional goals, and previous treatment experiences.
Why is the follow-up evaluation important?
The effect develops gradually. The follow-up evaluation helps review the clinical response, function, and treatment goals together.
