Botulinum Toxin in Neck Platysma Bands

It may be aimed to reduce the appearance of platysma bands that become prominent with facial expression and contraction, and to soften the lower face–neck transition.

Short answerThe goal may be to reduce the appearance of platysma bands that become prominent with facial expression and contraction, and to soften the lower face-to-neck transition.

What is Botulinum Toxin for Neck Platysma Bands?

In botulinum toxin procedures, the goal is to modulate target muscle or gland activity in a temporary and controlled manner. The result varies according to personal anatomy, muscle strength, the treatment area, and the clinical goal.

What are platysma bands?

The platysma is one of the superficial muscles of the neck. With age, skin structure, and muscle activity, vertical bands in the neck may become more visible.

What does botulinum toxin target?

It aims to soften the appearance of bands by reducing dynamic platysma activity. It does not eliminate significant skin laxity, excess fat, or structural neck changes.

Why is neck anatomy important?

The neck region contains structures related to swallowing and voice function. For this reason, it is an area where appropriate patient selection and functional assessment are just as important as the aesthetic goal.

Who can be evaluated for this?

Due to neck anatomy and swallowing function, patient selection and anatomical precision are important.

Pre-procedure evaluation

Our approach in our clinic, rather than applying a standard pattern of points, is to evaluate history, dynamic examination, facial or functional anatomy, asymmetry, previous procedures, and the individual’s goals together. In the evaluation, the person’s medical history, anatomical characteristics, previous procedures, and expectations from the treatment are addressed together.

Scientific evidence

The use of botulinum toxin in this area is addressed within the framework of clinical research and expert assessments. Appropriate patient selection, clearly defined goals, and personalized evaluation are the foundation of treatment.

When does the effect begin and how long does it last?

The effect usually begins to appear within the first few days and becomes more pronounced in the following days. The duration may vary depending on the treatment area, muscle activity, and individual biological differences. The timing of the follow-up examination is planned according to the type of procedure.

Possible side effects

Pain, tenderness, bruising, or headache may be seen at the injection site. Specific to the region, effects such as temporary asymmetry, unintended weakness in adjacent muscles, changes in eyelid/eyebrow position, changes in oral functions, or difficulty swallowing may occur. Rare but serious widespread muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or difficulty breathing require emergency medical evaluation.

Who may not be suitable?

Active infection in the treatment area, known hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin components, and certain neuromuscular diseases require special caution. Pregnancy/breastfeeding, anticoagulant use, aminoglycosides or medications that can affect neuromuscular transmission, and previous botulinum toxin procedures must be shared with the physician.

Things to consider after the procedure

It is appropriate not to rub unnecessarily or vigorously manipulate the treatment area on the same day. Short-term redness, tenderness, or small bruises may be seen at the injection points. Return to daily life is often possible in a short time; if heavy exercise, intense heat exposure, or another facial procedure is planned, follow your physician’s recommendation based on your individual situation. Because the effect is not complete immediately, one should not make an early decision regarding symmetry in the first hours or first days. If a pronounced change in mouth movements, difficulty swallowing, unexpected marked muscle weakness, or any other symptom that concerns you develops, contact our clinic. Serious symptoms such as breathing or pronounced swallowing difficulties require emergency medical evaluation.

Our approach in our Bodrum clinic

Our goal is not to standardize facial expression, but to create a personalized plan that preserves the person’s natural facial expressions, facial proportions, and opposing muscle balance.

Frequently asked questions

Is the effect permanent?

No. Nerve-muscle or nerve-gland communication is reestablished over time, and the effect diminishes.

Is the procedure planned the same way for everyone?

No. The plan is personalized taking into account clinical findings, anatomy, functional goals, and previous procedure experiences.

Why is the follow-up evaluation important?

The effect develops gradually. The follow-up evaluation helps to review clinical response, function, and treatment goals together.
