Mitochondrial Health and Aging: Energy Metabolism and Longevity

Mitochondrial health and longevity: learn about the role of energy metabolism, VO₂max, muscle performance, sleep, and metabolic flexibility in healthy aging.

Short answerMitochondria play a central role in cellular energy production. In the aging process, mitochondrial function is closely associated with muscle performance, metabolic health, and recovery capacity.

What affects mitochondrial health?

Regular exercise, especially aerobic and resistance training; adequate sleep, metabolic control, balanced energy intake, and avoiding smoking are fundamental factors supporting mitochondrial adaptation. The clinical evidence for products marketed as “mitochondrial support” varies depending on the molecule and the indication.

Which measurements provide indirect information?

VO₂max, exercise tolerance, muscle strength, resting heart rate, HRV, glucose-insulin balance, and body composition do not directly measure mitochondrial count; however, they provide clinically useful information regarding energy metabolism and physical capacity.

Our approach at our Bodrum clinic

We do not consider mitochondrial health synonymous with a single supplement or IV infusion. First, exercise capacity, sleep, metabolic status, and nutrition are evaluated. When necessary, NAD+, micronutrients, or other supports may be addressed, taking into account individual suitability and the level of evidence.
