What Is Cellulite? Which Treatments May Really Work?

Short answerCellulite is the dimpled or “orange peel” appearance of the skin, especially on the thighs and buttocks. It is very common and can occur even without excess weight. Cellulite is not merely “excess fat”; connective tissue septa, fat lobules, skin thickness, and genetics all play a role together.

What causes cellulite?

Fibrous bands beneath the skin pulling the skin downward and fat tissue bulging upward between them creates the typical dimpling. Hormones, genetics, skin thickness, age, and body composition can affect the appearance.

Does losing weight eliminate cellulite?

If excess weight is present, weight loss may reduce the appearance of cellulite in some individuals; however, cellulite can also occur in normal-weight and fit individuals. Rapid weight loss and loose skin can make the appearance more prominent in some people.

Which treatments have stronger evidence?

The American Academy of Dermatology states that there are studies reporting a reduction in appearance with acoustic wave therapy and certain laser/subcision-based methods. The longevity of results varies depending on the method, and repeat sessions may be required.

HIFU, Endolifting, or other energy-based methods

These methods can target skin tightness, local fat, or tissue quality; however, they are not the same as treatments that directly target cellulite septa. A choice should not be made based solely on the device’s name without evaluating the type of cellulite and accompanying skin laxity.

Mesotherapy, ozone, or bioresonance

Study results for mesotherapy in cellulite are limited, and side effects may be reported. There is no strong clinical evidence that ozone or bioresonance eliminates cellulite; therefore, they should not be offered with the promise of “getting rid of cellulite.”

Our approach at our Bodrum clinic

First, we evaluate the cellulite grade, skin laxity, fat distribution, and accompanying conditions such as circulation/edema. The goal is to select the most appropriate method aimed at reducing the appearance, with realistic expectations.
