What is chronic pain?
Chronic pain is a definition used for pain that typically lasts longer than three months or recurs. It may be associated with the lower back, neck, joints, nervous system, or another disease; in some individuals, the pain itself may become the primary clinical problem over time. The severity of pain does not always correlate directly with the tissue changes seen on imaging.
Why does pain sometimes become persistent?
In prolonged pain, not only the issue in the tissue, but also the sensitivity of the nervous system, sleep quality, movement avoidance, muscle strength, stress, and the demands of daily life can affect the picture. Therefore, the goal is not merely to lower the pain score, but to enable the individual to move again, sleep, and participate in daily life more comfortably.
In which situations is an evaluation helpful?
- If pain lasts longer than three months or recurs frequently
- If sleep, walking, work, or exercise capacity is affected
- If nerve-related symptoms such as burning, numbness, or electric shock sensations are present
- If loss of function persists despite trying multiple treatments
- If pain is accompanied by fatigue, anxiety, or significant restriction of movement
What can help?
The current approach does not rely on a single intervention. Depending on the individual, safe movement and exercise, physical therapy, improving sleep habits, appropriate medications, and in some cases interventional pain procedures can be evaluated together. In chronic primary pain, psychological support and pain-focused cognitive-behavioral approaches can also improve functionality in some individuals.
Our approach at our Bodrum clinic
In chronic pain, we first clarify the source and mechanism of the pain as much as possible. Then, by identifying the areas that most affect the individual’s daily life, we create a plan that avoids unnecessary procedures and is based on measurable goals.
For the clinical evaluation and treatment options of chronic pain in Bodrum, you can review the Bodrum Chronic Pain Treatment page; for our general approach, you can explore the Bodrum Pain Treatment main guide.
When is a more prompt evaluation required?
A more prompt medical evaluation is required if there is newly developed significant weakness, changes in bowel or bladder control, severe pain accompanied by fever, serious trauma, unexplained weight loss, or rapidly progressing neurological symptoms.
