Laser in Distal Biceps and Triceps Tendon Pain | Perielbow Tendinopathy

Disease-specific data for HILT in distal biceps and triceps tendinopathies around the elbow are scarce; a general tendinopathy meta-analysis indirectly supports the adjunct use of laser to rehabilitation.

Short answerDistal biceps and triceps tendons are structures located close to the surface around the elbow. Strong clinical studies specific to 980/1470 nm laser in these specific tendinopathies are scarce. Although the 2026 HILT tendinopathy meta-analysis generally reports improvement in pain and disability, most of the data is derived from lateral epicondylitis and the rotator cuff.

How do these tendon pains feel?

Distal biceps pain may increase at the front of the elbow with pulling, lifting, and supination; triceps tendon pain may increase behind the elbow with pushing and elbow extension.

How can laser help?

The goal is to reduce pain and facilitate the transition to controlled tendon loading. Tendon rupture or severe structural damage is not treated with laser.

The role of 980 nm

It is the more rational main wavelength for superficial to intermediate depth tendons.

The role of 1470 nm

It may be considered selectively for very superficial insertional tenderness; there is no direct efficacy data.

What does the scientific evidence say?

Level of evidence: C+. General HILT tendinopathy data is positive, but evidence specific to the distal biceps/triceps is scarce.

Our approach at our Bodrum clinic

At our Bodrum clinic, a distinction is made between tendinopathy and partial/complete rupture; if laser is used, it is added to progressive strengthening and load management.

When is a different evaluation required?

An evaluation for rupture is required in the presence of a sudden popping sensation, bruising, deformity, or significant loss of strength.
