Which effects can be part of the expected healing process?
- Mild edema and swelling
- Small bruises
- Temporary tenderness or tightness
- Short-term numbness in the treated area
- Temporary asymmetry or contour changes due to edema
Which complications are more significant?
- Thermal damage or burns
- Infection
- Persistent contour irregularity
- Seroma or fluid accumulation
- Nerve damage or prolonged sensory changes
- Pigment changes or scarring
Why does risk vary by area?
The periorbital area, jawline, neck, and certain facial regions are more delicate in terms of neurovascular structures. Around the eyes, symptoms such as reduced vision, double vision, or severe eye pain require urgent evaluation. If there is an unexplained mass or difficulty swallowing in the neck, a medical evaluation must be performed before any aesthetic procedure.
Why are energy and fiber important?
Even at the same wavelength, the total energy, power, fiber diameter, fiber movement, and tissue thickness alter the thermal effect. The laser lipolysis literature demonstrates that homogeneous energy distribution and fiber movement are critical for safety.
In whom can the procedure be postponed or re-evaluated?
- Active infection
- Significant bleeding risk
- Uncontrolled systemic disease
- Wound healing issues or active skin disease
- Elective aesthetic procedures during pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Suspicious mass or unexplained new swelling
Blood thinners should not be discontinued without a physician’s recommendation.
What does the scientific literature say about safety?
The 2024 systematic review reported mostly mild and self-limiting adverse effects in the included studies. However, a critical systematic review from 2025 emphasized that parameter standardization is limited and that there may be bias in safety evaluations. For this reason, absolute claims such as “complication-free” or “risk-free” are inaccurate.
When is an evaluation needed after the procedure?
Increasing pain, pronounced redness/heat, discharge, fever, newly developed significant weakness, persistent or progressive numbness, and severe asymmetry require evaluation. Vision changes or diplopia around the eyes must be considered emergencies.
Our approach in our Bodrum clinic
Prior to the procedure, the anatomical region, previous aesthetic treatments, medications, bleeding/healing risk, and expectations are evaluated together. Application parameters are selected based on the region and tissue thickness; the goal is not the highest energy, but an adequate and controlled tissue response.
