Long COVID: Skin, Hair, and Reproductive System Symptoms

Short answerHair loss, rash, itching, or temporary changes in menstrual regularity may be reported in some people after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Although these findings may occur in the context of Long COVID, they alone do not establish a diagnosis of Long COVID.

Hair loss

Diffuse hair loss called telogen effluvium may develop after infection, fever, and physiological stress. This condition is often noticed weeks or months after the infection. Iron deficiency, thyroid disorders, rapid weight loss, and other causes should also be evaluated.

Skin findings

Rash, hives-like lesions, or color changes may be reported in the post-COVID period; however, skin lesions can occur for many different reasons. Persistent, painful, ulcerative, or rapidly spreading lesions require dermatological evaluation.

Menstrual cycle and reproductive health

Infection, stress, weight changes, and temporary effects on the hormonal axis may lead to changes in the menstrual cycle. Gynecological evaluation is needed if there is prolonged irregularity, excessive bleeding, a possibility of pregnancy, or pelvic pain.

Is there a single Long COVID treatment that “balances hormones”?

No. Hormone or supplement therapy should not be routinely started without laboratory and clinical findings. The evaluation is performed according to which axis is affected.
