Short answerThe goal is to make the vermilion slightly more visible through a limited reduction of muscle tone at the border of the upper lip; it is not a volume-adding filler.

What is Lip Flip Botulinum Toxin?

The goal in botulinum toxin procedures is to temporarily and in a controlled manner modulate the activity of the target muscle or gland. The outcome varies according to personal anatomy, muscle strength, application area, and clinical goal.

What does a lip flip do?

A lip flip aims to make the lip slightly more visible, particularly during smiling, by limitedly reducing muscle activity around the upper lip. It does not add volume to the lip and is not the same procedure as a filler application.

In whom should expectations be kept limited?

If there is significant volume loss, structural lip asymmetry, or an expectation of greater projection, a lip flip may not meet these goals. Excessive muscle weakening is not desired due to speaking and drinking functions.

Who can be evaluated for it?

Lip function and smile dynamics are evaluated. The effect is limited, and the possibility of temporary changes in speaking/eating functions is discussed with the patient.

Pre-procedure evaluation

Our approach in our clinic is to evaluate history, dynamic examination, facial or functional anatomy, asymmetry, previous procedures, and the individual’s goals together, rather than applying a standard point template. In the evaluation, the person’s medical history, anatomical features, previous procedures, and treatment expectations are addressed together.

Scientific evidence

This application area is evaluated on the basis of botulinum toxin’s effect of temporarily reducing muscle activity. Scientific publications and expert consensuses indicate that patient selection and anatomical evaluation are important for outcomes and safety.

When does the effect begin and how long does it last?

The effect usually begins to appear within the first few days and becomes more pronounced in the following days. The duration may vary depending on the application area, muscle activity, and individual biological differences. The timing of the follow-up examination is planned according to the type of procedure.

Possible side effects

Pain, tenderness, bruising, or headache may be seen at the injection site. Specific to the area, effects such as temporary asymmetry, unwanted weakness in adjacent muscles, changes in eyelid/eyebrow position, changes in oral functions, or difficulty swallowing may occur. Rare but serious widespread muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or breathing difficulties require emergency medical evaluation.

In whom might it not be suitable?

Active infection in the treatment area, known hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin components, and certain neuromuscular diseases require special caution. Pregnancy/breastfeeding, anticoagulant use, aminoglycosides or medications that can affect neuromuscular transmission, and previous botulinum toxin procedures should be shared with the physician.

Post-procedure considerations

It is advisable not to rub or heavily manipulate the application area unnecessarily on the same day. Short-term redness, tenderness, or small bruises may be observed at the injection points. Return to daily life is often possible in a short time; if strenuous exercise, intense heat exposure, or another facial procedure is planned, follow your physician’s recommendation according to your personal situation. Since the effect is not completed immediately, premature decisions regarding symmetry should not be made in the first hours or first days. If a pronounced change in eyelid or eyebrow position, a new vision-related complaint, unexpected marked weakness, or any other symptom that concerns you develops, contact our clinic. Serious symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or breathing require emergency medical evaluation.

Our approach in our Bodrum clinic

Our goal is not to standardize facial expressions, but to create a personalized plan that preserves the person’s natural facial dynamics, facial proportions, and opposing muscle balance.

Frequently asked questions

Is the effect permanent?

No. Nerve-muscle or nerve-gland communication is re-established over time, and the effect diminishes.

Is the procedure planned the same way for everyone?

No. The plan is personalized by taking into account anatomy, muscle activity, functional characteristics, goals, and previous procedure experiences.

Why is the follow-up evaluation important?

The effect of botulinum toxin is not completed immediately. The follow-up evaluation helps assess clinical response, symmetry, and alignment with the individual’s goals together.
